Two Christian Colleges Temporarily Exempt from Birth Control Mandate

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADC) has achieved another victory–at least for now. On Wednesday, a court granted Christian schools Dordt College and Cornerstone University temporary reprieve from paying for employees’ birth control. Obamacare requires employers to pay for drugs that could induce abortions.

“Christian colleges should remain free to operate according to their defining beliefs,” ADF Senior Counsel Gregory S. Baylor said in a press release. “Under this mandate, religious employers have no real choice: they must either comply and abandon their religious freedom, or resist and be taxed for their faith. If the government can force Christian colleges to act contrary to their deeply-held religious convictions, then the government can do just about anything. The court was right to block enforcement of this unconstitutional mandate.”

The mandate exempts churches, but other Christian organizations contend they also should be exempted on religious grounds.

Angie Remington, who works for Planned Parenthood, expounds on the reasons women take birth control and invokes the “health risk” rationale. “When employers refuse to cover birth control as a part of their employees’ benefits, this becomes a health care issue and an economic issue for a woman and her family, especially if she is struggling to make ends meet.”

Does Remington know women can obtain birth control pills at places like Walmart for as low as $4 for a one-month supply? They can also buy the abortion drug Plan B, condoms, the sponge, and spermicides over the counter. Given these inexpensive options, why would she and other “pro-choicers” push Christian schools to pay for these things?
