Christians, Sin, and Elections

protectmarriageillinois_2Will the issue of homosexual “marriage” heat up in November, as the Religion News Service speculates? Mentioned in the article is a group calling itself Evangelicals for Marriage Equality.

I wonder if the members support actual marriage equality. That would mean support for unions of more than two people or between siblings or parents and children. Marriage equality would mean that minors could marry adults, otherwise it’s not equal, is it? Or do they mean only two men or two women? If so, why the two-person limit?

Start made-up Q&A:

“Because marriage is a union of only two.”

“Says who?”

“Well, says…God.”

“But God said that a man shall leave his parents and cleave to his wife — a woman. And God made the woman for the man. The implication is that marriage is the union of two, complementary, opposite sex people who can fulfill God’s command to be fruitful and multiply.”

“Regardless, we’re talking about only two, consenting adults.”

“So marriage equality would include two, consenting-adult siblings of the opposite or same sex?”

“Well, no. Brother and sister can’t marry.”

“Neither can two men.”

“Yes, but…”

“For the record, God calls homosexuality an abomination.”

End made-up Q&A

A spokesman for Evangelicals for Marriage Equality said his organization “is not taking a theological position on the issue of the sacrament of marriage. We just want evangelicals to see that it is possible to hold a plethora of beliefs about sexuality and marriage while affirming the rights of LGBTQ men and women to be civilly married under the law.”

The Bible clearly condemns homosexuality as a sin. Would the group refrain from taking a theological position on the issue of adultery if adulterers formed a powerful lobby and pushed for acceptance and celebration of cheating on spouses?

The only Christians torn over the sin of homosexuality are those who hold a low view of Scripture and care more about the opinions of men instead of God. Homosexuality is a sin like any other, and sin sent Christ to the cross. I believe the mainstreaming of perversion to the point that self-professed Christians cave to it is part of God’s judgment.
