Is Family Instability Good For the Democrats?

blackfamilyThe Heritage Foundation’s The Daily Signal published an adaptation of Con Job: How Democrats Gave Us Crime, Sanctuary Cities, Abortion Profiteering, and Racial Division, by black conservative blogger Crystal Wright.

Wright cited the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s “The Negro Family: The Case For National Action” report in which he warned about the increasing social pathology among female-headed households in the black community. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the report’s publication.

Five decades ago, almost a quarter of black babies were born to unmarried women. Today, close to 75 percent are born into these households. Children who grow up in unstable homes face a higher risk of dropping out of school, getting suspended or expelled, becoming pregnant out of wedlock, and ending up in prison.

“The majority of black babies are being born to single mothers—a prescription for a life of poverty and crime,” Wright wrote. “And despite the warnings that have sounded off loudly for over half a century, Democrats have done nothing to stop blacks, their most steadfast constituents, from having babies they can’t take care of. This problem has perpetuated itself for generations, producing generational poverty among blacks…If black lives truly matter, as Democrats shout at the top of their lungs, why don’t they promulgate policies that encourage blacks to get married before they have kids?”

Wright contended that what’s bad for blacks “translates into a high rate of return on investment for Democrats,” who market the “‘no baby daddy’ syndrome,” encouraging illegitimacy.

The damage is done, and illegitimacy is generational. The majority of black children don’t grow up living in the same house as their biological fathers.

“In other words, in America today, it is rare for black babies to be born to married parents. Black fathers are simply not part of the black family equation. Think about that.”

  1. Probably the most effective incentive government can itto poor families, black or otherwise, is to immediately stop pissing away taxpayer funds to support it. In other words we should not subsidize things which we would like to end.
