Some Americans can’t quite grasp that the U.S. Constitution restrains the government from certain actions against individuals. For example, neither the government nor individuals and groups acting under the “color of law” may discriminate against individuals on the basis of race.
Although private groups have the right to freely associate with whomever they choose (a form of discrimination), our government has no such freedom. King 5 News reported that a group of black employees at South Puget Sound Community College, a government-funded institution, sent invitations to other black staffers to attend a Happy Hour:
The invite made it clear white people were not invited.
The email read: “If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy, and white privilege to better our campus community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that.”
“It was obviously a mistake,” said SPSCC’s Dean of College Relations, Kellie Purce Braseth.
Braseth said the group that put out the email last week apologized the next day and canceled the event.
A mistake typically is something you unintentionally do. Did the group unintentionally send invitations to only black staffers?
Private groups may segregate; the government may not.
