After Trump Admin Announced Church Support, Mississippi Mayor Rescinds Order Barring Drive-In Services

Temple Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi, filed a lawsuit against the city over the mayor’s executive order banning drive-in church services. Mayor Errick Simmons claimed such gatherings violated the state’s shelter-in-place order. After a backlash, he rescinded fines.

The U.S. Attorney General’s Office this week issued a statement of support for the church.

Now comes the news that Mayor Simmons has rescinded the order itself. From Townhall:

“Today, given the definitive guidance from the governor, in the city of Greenville we will allow drive-in and parking lot services in the city – so long as families stay in their cars with windows up,” Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons said Wednesday in a press conference.

The Democratic mayor said his decision came after speaking with Republican Gov. Tate Reeves, who told local leaders across the state that drive-in services are OK so long as social distancing guidelines are followed.

After the COVID-19 crisis is over, what’s the takeaway from government action barring church attendance? Why did this mayor specifically ban Christians from sitting in their cars listening to sermons in the parking lot, when people can still go to fast-food drive-through windows?
