George Floyd’s brother is grieving him. He’s angry about what happened. But Terrence Floyd does not condone the violence committed in his brother’s name.
Former officer Derek Chauvin arrested George for suspected forgery and restrained him with handcuffs and a knee on his neck. Floyd said he couldn’t breathe, but Chauvin did not let up. George died later in custody.
Chauvin has been charged with manslaughter and third-degree murder.
What started out as peaceful protests against what happened to Floyd turned into violence and destruction. Cities have enacted curfews to clear the streets. Rioters have thrown objects at the police, attacked people who tried to protect their businesses and other people, broken into and burned buildings, and looted businesses.
All in the name of George Floyd?
Terrence Floyd said his brother “wasn’t about that. My brother was about peace. You’ll hear a lot of people say he was a gentle giant.” If George’s own family wasn’t out there hurting people and destroying property, why should others, who didn’t even know him, destroy their own communities?
“Because when you finish, and then you turn around and want to go buy something, you done tore it up,” Floyd said. “So now you messed up your own living arrangements. So just relax. Justice will be served.”
