This Library Tried to Cancel Kirk Cameron — It Didn’t Work

Since public libraries across the country are allowing men in drag to read to children during story hour, Kirk Cameron, a Christian and an actor, participated in a program sponsored by Moms for Liberty to read to children…while dressed normally, of course.

Cameron reads children’s books he wrote. Naturally, he’s gotten push-back.

Brave Books, Cameron’s publisher, created the program, calling it a national movement for free speech:

In a national campaign uniting families all across America, BRAVE’s 2023 ‘See You at the Library’ Day united 300 hosts across 46 states. Next year, we hope to see you at the second annual ’See You At The Library’ Day at your local library.

Cameron and Riley Gaines, an outspoken advocate for protecting women’s sports from men pretending to be women, were scheduled to attend reading events in Alabama’s Madison County Public Library System in Huntsville. But the library canceled the event scheduled for Saturday, August 5, citing security concerns.

“Due to the event’s anticipated attendance increasing beyond the Library’s capacity, the Library will be unable to host the event. Initially, the organizers of the event reported 20 attendees to library officials. On Tuesday the Library learned that event organizers are now expecting over 300 people, a number that far exceeds any meeting room capacity within the Huntsville-Madison County Library System.”

But after a backlash — and a letter from First Liberty Institute — the library system backtracked.

The administrators agreed to allow Kirk Cameron to read at the event, which was held on Saturday, August 5, as originally planned. The library system agreed to a limit of 225 attendees.

But it’s not over. The American Library Association (ALA) is under the gun for potentially misusing taxpayers’ money to silence Brave Books. Lawmakers sent a letter to the Institute of Museum and Library Services demanding an investigation. From First Liberty:

In June, an ALA official provided guidance on how to prevent story hours held by Brave Books from happening at libraries. At the same time, however, the ALA has continued to promote “Drag Queen Story Hours” that expose minors to sexual topics.

“While claiming to promote equality and diversity, the ALA is conspiring to deny access to thousands of citizens based upon open intolerance of their religious beliefs,” said Jeremy Dys, Senior Counsel for First liberty. “Such actions are blatantly unconstitutional. Federal taxpayers should not be required to fund such bigotry and intolerance.”
