Ohio Legislature Overrides Gov. Mike DeWine’s Veto — Protects Children from Puberty Blockers and Women’s Sports

Lawmakers in Ohio recently overrode Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of a bill that protects children from “transgender” surgery, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones, which could render them permanently sterile.

Gov. DeWine had refused to sign the Saving Ohio Adolescents from Experimentation Act (PDF), because he said after speaking with parents with “transgender” children, he did not want to deprive them of “gender-affirming care.” He issued an emergency executive order barring the surgery, but not puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones. And he doesn’t care about barring boys from competing on girls’ sports teams.

The state House overrode his veto, followed by the Senate on Wednesday. The law will take effect in April.

“We commend the Ohio Senate for overriding Gov. Mike DeWine’s misguided veto of the SAFE Act,” said Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Matt Sharp, “a bill that rejects the politicized and harmful practice of pushing minors towards irreversible drugs and surgeries in favor of compassionate mental health care that gives them time to grow into comfort with their bodies and true identities.”
