Ohio Governor Signs Bathroom Privacy Bill After Vetoing Puberty Blocker Ban in January

Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio recently signed a bill into law that bars government schools K-12 from allowing boys to use girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, or changing rooms, and vice versa.

The new law, which goes into effect 90 days from signing, also bars government schools from allowing children of the opposite sex to share rooms overnight.

Our country has reached this ridiculous point. But we take our victories where we find them. Girls should not be afraid to enter their own restrooms or change in locker rooms with boys looking at them. Ohio lawmakers said no, we will not allow government schools to compromise the safety of girls or violate their privacy and sense of modesty.

Opponents say the law makes “transgender” students unsafe. From UPI:

“We are deeply disappointed that Gov. DeWine has allowed this dangerous bill to become law that puts vulnerable trans youth at risk for abuse and harassment. Equality Ohio will continue to stand in solidarity with our transgender communities and their families, and we will always fight for fairness in Ohio.”

Girls also are vulnerable to abuse and harassment.

Gov. DeWine in January vetoed a bill that barred harmful puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors. He said that he’d spoken to parents of “transgender” children and didn’t want to deprive them of “gender-affirming care.” Lawmakers overrode his veto. The governor does oppose “transgender” surgery for children and issued an emergency executive order to block such procedures.

“States have a duty to protect the privacy, safety, and dignity of women and young girls,” said Sara Beth Nolan, Alliance Defending Freedom lawyer. “Yet certain advocacy organizations—and the Biden-Harris administration through its Title IX rule change—are demanding that states devalue women by eliminating longstanding, distinct private spaces for males and females.”

Let’s hope more states pass these laws and protect girls and women.
