President Trump Reinstates Policy That Bans Taxpayers’ Money for Abortions in Foreign Countries

During President Donald Trump’s first term, his administration enacted the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, to require foreigners who seek to claim asylum in the United States to claim asylum in the first country they entered before reaching the U.S.

If they don’t, the U.S. will not grant asylum.

The Remain in Mexico policy also ended “catch and release,” which allowed illegal aliens to remain in the U.S. Under the policy, the U.S. cut off aid to any group operating in another country that provides abortion services, counsels people about abortion, or advocates for abortion rights.

After some legal grappling, the Biden administration effectively ended the policy. But President Trump brought it back. Not only has he reinstated and expanded “Remain in Mexico,” he’s issued a rule to prevent Title X tax funds from subsidizing the abortion industry. He also stopped federal funding for the United Nations Population, fetal tissue (aborted babies) research, and more.
