Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called on African countries to boycott goods and services by Israeli companies in the West Bank.
Abbas, who is visiting South Africa, spoke at the 25th African Union Assembly in Johannesburg, where he stated, “We must boycott the settlements which were established on Arab land, contrary to international law and resolutions.”
As the [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] BDS Movement grows throughout Europe and North America, Abbas’s call for boycott of Israeli goods in Africa shows the growth of the movement. Abbas, however, stated that the Palestinians do “not support the boycott of Israel… But we ask everyone to boycott the products of the settlements. Because the settlements are in our territories. It is illegal… But we do not ask anyone to boycott Israel itself. We have relations with Israel, we have mutual recognition of Israel.”
