Iran has its eyes on the destruction of Israel, even as President Obama is focused on the latest round of political support for his controversial nuclear deal with Iran, according to statements from its leader.
On Wednesday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei referred to the United States as “The Great Satan” and gleefully predicted the destruction of Israel. Comments posted to Khamenei’s official Twitter account repeated themes expressed in speeches in Tehran earlier Wednesday.
“After negotiations, in Zionist regime they said they had no more concern about Iran for next 25 years; I’d say: Firstly, you will not see next 25 years; God willing, there will be nothing as Zionist regime by next 25 years,” Khamenei wrote on Twitter. “Secondly, until then, struggling, heroic and jihadi morale will leave no moment of serenity for Zionists.”
The text is imposed over a photograph showing what appears to be Khamenei walking on an Israeli flag painted on a sidewalk. Further postings on Twitter were filled with anti-American rhetoric.
“We approved talks with the United States about [the] nuclear issue specifically. We have not allowed talks with the US in other fields and we [do] not negotiate with them,” Khamenei wrote. Another post said further talks would be “a tool for penetration and imposing their demands.”
Quoting Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded Iran’s Islamic Republic, Khamenei tweeted: “@IRKhomeini stated “US is the Great Satan,” some insist on depicting this Great Satan as an angel.”
“The Iranian nation ousted the Satan. We should not let it back through the window,” he said, referring to the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed shah.
The series of tweets came as Obama gained further support for pushing his nuclear deal with Iran through Congress. Although efforts to block the deal in Congress face long odds, the deal has significant opposition beyond the Beltway.
“The deal is predicated on a foreign policy view that assumes that by being nice America can reform the behavior of a rogue nation. It is a dangerous gamble. Iran remains the world’s chief sponsor of terrorism and has cheated on every agreement over the past 30 years,” wrote Rep. Dave Trott, R-MI, and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette in a Detroit News column.
