Authorities say that some 10 militants intent on killing as many children as possible entered a military school compound in Peshawar early Tuesday. A post at rt.com says the killers were dressed in Pakistani military uniforms so as not to arouse suspicion before they opened fire.
According to the latest reports, at least 130 people — most of them students as young as 12 — have been killed and at least 100 others injured. The casualty count continues, with the death toll expected to rise.
Pakistani security forces reportedly responded quickly to the attack. Via rt.com:
In the ensuing battle with Pakistani security forces, five militants were killed, according to the military. One of them is said to have detonated a suicide vest he was wearing, local media reported.
The surviving militants in the school, still apparently holding hostages, fought furiously for hours, according to a report from Reuters.
Hours into the siege, three explosions were heard inside the military-run high school, and a Reuters journalist at the scene said he heard heavy gunfire.
