Aisha Moodie-Mills of the Center for American Progress was a guest on MSNBC’s The Rundown with Jose Diaz-Balart on Monday where she blamed Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu’s re-election defeat on white racists who hate President Barack Obama. Three-term Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy won the run-off election on Saturday by nearly 12 points, which completes the GOP’s takeover of Deep South politics and domination of the midterm elections.
Diaz-Balart asked the director of the FIRE Initiative at the CAP if Landrieu’s re-election loss will be a problem for Hillary Clinton or any other Democrat in the 2016 elections. Moodie-Mills responded, “Well sure. The South is going to be a tough nut to crack.”
She went on to explain that she doesn’t believe Democrats lost the South because of “policies exclusively.” Moodie-Mills insists that racism is the reason the southern states have turned their backs on the Democratic party.
The reality, and every single poll shows this, is that Democrats have completely lost the South because white people are running away from Barack Obama and this African-American man who is occupying the White House. Mary Landrieu only got something like 18 percent of the white vote. You’re seeing that more and more and more white people are voting for Republicans. And I talk about that because we can’t discount the idea of the racial politics that are playing out down there. People hate this president and southerners hate this president more than they’ve hated any other Democratic president.
