Costco Gets Out of the Abortion Pill Business ‘Based on Lack of Demand’ From Members

Kroger and Sam’s Club made it clear last year that they do not sell mifepristone, a drug that blocks the hormone progesterone, starving unborn babies of nutrients. Misoprostol, part of the process, expels the tissue.

The abortion business isn’t exactly popular right now.

Costco recently announced that it will not sell the drug, either. From Reuters:

“Our position at this time not to sell mifepristone, which has not changed, is based on the lack of demand from our members and other patients, who we understand generally have the drug dispensed by their medical providers,” Costco said.

The decision comes amid campaigns against the pill by religious activist groups, including Inspire Investing and Alliance Defending Freedom.

Is “lack of demand” from members a good enough reason? Is it the whole truth? Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) seems to imply that the lack of demand is not the whole truth.

“We applaud Costco for doing the right thing by its shareholders and resisting activist calls to sell abortion drugs, said Michael Ross, ADF attorney. “Retailers like Costco keep their doors open by selling a lifetime of purchases to families, both large and small. They have nothing to gain and much to lose by becoming abortion dispensaries. Retail pharmacies exist to serve the health and wellness of their customers, but abortion drugs like mifepristone undermine that mission by putting women’s health at risk.”

In the scheme of things, Costco’s reasons for not selling a drug that induces abortions don’t matter. Unborn lives are saved, and pro-life customers can continue to shop at the wholesaler in good conscience.
