The Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) Supports S.6, Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act

Dear Senator:

The Senate is soon expected to vote on a motion to invoke cloture and proceed to consideration of S.6, “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” We urge you to invoke cloture and then vote to enact this important legislation.

S.6 requires health care practitioners to provide the same care for a child born alive following an abortion attempt as they would to any infant born at the same gestational age. Allowing a child to suffer and die without interventions is inhumane and should not happen in America.

In 2002, Congress passed the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which codified that a newborn child, regardless of the circumstances of its birth, is to be legally recognized as a person from the moment of birth if the child shows any sign of life. That law did not provide any measures to enforce the protection of these infants, thereby causing some infants to be left to die after surviving an attempted abortion.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act adds clear expectations of care, hospital transfer requirements, mandatory reporting, private rights of action for moms, and reasonable penalties for health care professionals who violate the law.

Civilizations are measured by how they treat their most vulnerable members. There are few Americans more vulnerable and deserving of protection than a child who is born surviving an abortion attempt. We should recognize the humanity of these precious newborns and make every effort to save their lives.

The protection of human life is the most important responsibility for every level of government. Our Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Fittingly, the first of these rights is the right to life. Without it, we cannot enjoy any of the rights endowed by our Creator and affirmed in our nation’s founding documents.

We urge you to affirm the dignity and value of every human life by invoking cloture and voting to enact S.6, “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”
