Don’t Let the COVID-19 Crisis Turn America into a Socialist Welfare State

Congress worked over the weekend but didn’t accomplish what many Americans are waiting for: a little financial relief in the form of a check.

President Donald Trump last week proposed giving individuals checks for $1,000 and $500 per child. But Senate Democrats on Sunday rejected a cloture vote on the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a measure that would have included the check provision. Lawmakers said the bill served corporations more than workers, and they want to negotiate a better bill.

What will America look like after the COVID-19 crisis passes — a socialist welfare state? Right now, corporations and workers are lining up so Congress can write them checks.

Star Parker, founder and president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, believes in a different way, one that won’t result in Americans being more dependent on Big Government. How about returning the 2019 income tax of everyone who made $300,000 or less? Or allow workers to borrow a set amount of money from their 401ks and IRAs without penalties?

“And incentivize credit card companies, banks and other lenders to double all credit lines at one percent interest rates,” Star said. “Wouldn’t this be better than forcing Americans into a welfare line?”

Companies like hotels, movie theaters, and airlines can use their cushions and credit lines to pay employees they just laid off.

“I’m getting sick just thinking about what this country will look like after this virus passes if we are not fighting for freedom: one big government nanny welfare state,” Star said. “This will become a disaster for us, for our grandkids and for their kids.”

Nevertheless, Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell calls Democrats’ rejection of CARES obstruction.

Do you believe the government should send Americans relief checks?
