Female Athletes Sue Minnesota Over Policy That Allows Men on Their Sports Teams

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday on behalf of Female Athletes United (FAU) against the state of Minnesota over a “transgender” policy their violates their Title IX right to equal opportunity in sports.

According to ADF,  members of the organization include high school girls forced to play against a team with a boy. Needless to say, that team defeated the girls. According to the lawsuit, filed on Monday, a girls’ softball team didn’t advance to the state tournament because the team competed against a boy for two years. From AFL:

Her team competed against and lost to this male athlete in a regular season game this year. In that game, the FAU member’s team didn’t score at all; the male athlete pitched seven strikeouts. Her team is likely to compete against this mixed-sex team again in a sectional competition this season, and again next year.

One female athlete, a pitcher, quit the team when she learned she’d have to compete against a boy pitching for an opposing team. It’s safe to say there are many other stories like these.

“Minnesota is failing its female athletes. The state is putting the rights of males ahead of females, telling girls their hard work may never be enough to win and that they don’t deserve fairness and safety,” said Suzanne Beecher, ADF senior counsel. “By sacrificing protection for female athletes, Minnesota fails to offer girls equal treatment and opportunity, violating Title IX’s provisions.”

The female athletes asked the court for a declaration that the state violated Title IX and that Title IX preempts state law.
