Dr. Ben Carson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), visited Baltimore this week in the wake of controversy about what’s happening in distressed zip codes in the city. He invited Rep. Elijah Cummings, who represents parts of the city and most of the black areas of Baltimore County, to visit the HUD facility there.
He refused Dr. Carson’s invitation.
Dr. Carson said he has a special place in his heart for the city of Baltimore and the people. He’s said there are good places and good people, but we can’t sweep problems under the rug. He used a medical analogy to describe what will happen if nothing improves.
The city of Baltimore has problems that can’t be swept under the rug. As a doctor, I know that you can’t just put a suit on a patient who has cancer and declare them healthy. We have to be willing to address these serious issues if we are ever going to solve them. pic.twitter.com/HL9Rcc0od1
