I don’t read Jezebel, but I know that a black woman named Dodai Stewart is deputy editor.
She’s worked there since 2007. Jezebel’s editor-in-chief recently resigned, and Gawker Media, which owns Jezebel and other blogs, searched for a replacement. Stewart seemed a shoe-in. She took the helm when the former chief needed her, and her experience and position made her an obvious choice.
Well, it wasn’t so obvious to the people in charge. One wonders why they didn’t seize the opportunity to serve as an example of this “diversity” they’re always preaching about. They passed over Stewart for a 25-year-old white woman with less experience to run the site. And other liberals aren’t happy. The “scandal” of it all! (sarcasm alert) From Capital New York:
But the decision to hand the site to a young white woman instead of Stewart—a black woman who has been working at the site since Carmichael was still in college—rubs some current and former staffers the wrong way, especially since the site has been criticized in the past for its handling of race issues.
“I would not say that I think it is like a racist action, but it is kind of a missed opportunity,” one staffer said. “The race thing would have been a really wonderful—just like to have a really well-established Black woman who is so good at her job running the site would have been great.”
Imagine, if you can, the reaction if a conservative publication had passed over a black person who was an obvious choice to replace a departing editor. The “controversy” would have gone global. I think owners should hire who they want to hire, and for whatever reason, but I couldn’t miss this opportunity to point out white liberal hypocrisy. This tweet sums it up:
Dodai Stewart getting screwed over would be a story in @Jezebel if it hadn't happened at Jezebel.
