The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) last week changed the rules and banned men from competing against women. This decision came after President Donald Trump issued an executive order barring men from women’s sports teams in schools and educational programs that receive federal dollars.
The NCAA allowed a man calling himself Lia Thomas to steal the 500-yard freestyle swimming championship from the women who worked hard to qualify. The NCAA added to the absurdity by nominating Thomas — a man — 2022 Woman of the Year.
The organization should go much further to make things right. The NCAA should apologize to all college female athletes — and strip men from the record books and take back the metals. The Trump administration agrees.
The U.S. Department of Education earlier this week sent a letter to the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations “urging them to restore to female athletes the records, titles, awards, and recognitions misappropriated by biological males competing in female categories.”
Following the NCAA banning men from women’s teams, the organization must restore the athletic records to credit women for their hard work and sacrifices.
“The Trump Education Department will do everything in our power to right this wrong and champion the hard-earned accomplishments of past, current, and future female collegiate athletes,” said Candice Jackson, the department’s deputy general counsel.
Riley Gaines, a University of Kentucky graduate and outspoken women’s sports advocate, was incensed about Thomas. She competed against him in the NCAA swimming championships and testified before Congress that some of the women on her swimming team had to change in a janitor’s closet to avoid changing in front of Thomas.
“For the past four years, women have been begging for equal opportunities to compete and succeed, only to be ignored,” she said. “A president who recognizes and celebrates women for our accomplishments is long overdue. Restoring stolen athletic accolades to their rightful owners is a crucial step towards reinstating accountability, integrity, and common sense – one that I wholeheartedly support.”
