Christians believe what the Bible teaches about lying. Bearing false witness is a sin. Christians also believe that God created male and female.
But under a so-called “gender expression” law in New York, Christians would have to lie and deny God’s created order. Aside from the religious aspect, using incorrect pronouns is irrational.
According to Liberty Counsel, a Christian woman in New York was fired from the state-owned Genesee Country Village & Museum for refusing to refer to her male coworker by incorrect pronouns. Under New York’s Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), everyone must participate in other people’s sexual fetishes.
Religious freedom is a right guaranteed under federal and state constitutions. Forcing normal people to lie is not.
Liberty Counsel filed a lawsuit on the woman’s behalf. An excerpt:
The lawsuit stated that New York’s GENDA law and the museum’s policies, under the banner of DEAI, placed Berkemeier in an “irresolvable conflict” between compliance with government-imposed beliefs or her sincerely held religious beliefs.
“GENDA, on its face and as applied, constitutes a religious gerrymander by unconstitutionally orphaning sincerely held religious beliefs while permitting the [government’s] more favored nonreligious value systems,” read the lawsuit.
The plaintiff seeks an injunction against the law, job reinstatement, back pay, and damages.
“People have a constitutional right to live according to their religious beliefs,” said Mat Staver, Liberty Counsel founder and chairman. “The religious protections under the First Amendment and Title VII render New York’s Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act unconstitutional. The government does not have the power to compel people to abandon or contradict their faith and New York’s attempt to silence religion should be permanently struck down.”
