A Former New York City Official Wanted to Punish the NRA for Existing — And It Backfired

New York City. Have you ever heard of a place so anti-gun where law-abiding residents need guns for personal protection? Residents have had to battle this city for their Second Amendment right to possess and carry handguns.

And now this: a former New York City official wanted to punish the National Rifle Association (NRA) after some nut shot people at a Florida high school. She pressured banks and insurance companies not to do business with the organization.

Maria Vullo was the superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services when she used her position and influence to blacklist the NRA.

The pro-gun organization filed a lawsuit in 2018. The ACLU represents the NRA. Yes, that ACLU.

A lower court allowed the lawsuit to go forward, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed the ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court last month reversed that ruling and allowed the case to proceed. The vote was unanimous.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the opinion.

“Government officials cannot attempt to coerce private parties in order to punish or suppress views that the government disfavors. Petitioner National Rifle Association (NRA) plausibly alleges that respondent Maria Vullo did just that.”

Star Parker, founder and president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, said that her organization filed an amicus brief in the case in January.

“We argued that the government cannot censor or punish a speaker or entity like the NRA by punishing third-party associations and organizations like the insurance companies who dare to associate with the speaker, in this case, the NRA,” Star said on Straight Arrow News.

Star said she will be vigilant “in protecting our freedom over and over again, if necessary, and particularly as long as the Biden administration is in power here in Washington, D.C.”
