Planned Parenthood Fails Again — South Carolina Supreme Court Upholds the State’s Pro-Life Law

South Carolina lawmakers passed a bill in 2021 to ban abortion if the abortionist detects a heartbeat, which begins at six weeks. Governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act into law.

Planned Parenthood sued the state, and the South Carolina Supreme Court struck down the law. The court contended that it violated women’s “right of privacy” to kill their unborn babies.

South Carolina lawmakers drafted and passed a different version of the bill, but Planned Parenthood wasn’t about to give up its mission to slaughter the voiceless and vulnerable unborn. The abortion mill challenged this version of the law and lost. The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that the ban did not violate the state constitution.

The abortion mill tried for a third time to get rid of the law, this time claiming that fetal heartbeat begins at nine weeks instead of six. The South Carolina Supreme Court rejected that argument on Wednesday.

“Planned Parenthood has failed in attempting to rewrite the science of human development to further their agenda for more abortions and more profit,” said Caitlin Connors, SBA Pro-Life political director. “The level of science denial from this abortion giant that receives $800 million in taxpayer funding annually should astound South Carolinians who overwhelmingly re-elected Gov. Henry McMaster and state Republicans after they enacted the heartbeat law.”

South Carolina has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, banning the procedure starting at six weeks. Women who seek to kill their babies must wait 24 hours after counseling. Only doctors can kill unborn babies, and women can’t use state Medicaid except in limited circumstances.

South Carolina seeks to block state Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case.
