Letitia James, New York attorney general, has threatened pro-life pregnancy centers for offering women the chance to reverse abortions.
The attorney general filed a lawsuit to stop pregnancy centers from sharing information about Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services. She claims the centers give misleading information and omit information about APR.
James filed a motion in New York County to have the case heard in Manhattan, although most of the pregnancy centers she threatened are in upstate New York. The Supreme Court of the State of New York rejected the attorney general’s motion.
Crisis pregnancy centers want women to know their options. If they’ve taken an abortion pill and changed their minds, they may be able to save their precious child. The mission of these centers is to give these women hope and to protect babies from death.
If a pregnant woman has taken mifepristone, which induces abortions, taking progesterone could reverse the abortion.
James is facing at least three lawsuits. The most recent one involves Summit Life Outreach Center and The Evergreen Association, which the Thomas More Society filed on their behalf on August 7. The plaintiffs allege that James’s threats to harass them are chilling free speech.
The information the centers share about APR is true, Thomas More Society said, and they have a First Amendment right to share it.
“Shamefully, Ms. James seeks to steal away a woman’s choice to save her preborn child, should that pregnant woman seek to stop her in-progress chemical abortion, after taking the first abortion pill,” said Peter Breen, Thomas More Society executive vice president & head of Litigation. “Abortion Pill Reversal gives women a second chance to choose life—a life-saving option that Ms. James seems to think pregnant women are not entitled to choose.”
Thomas More Society also filed a lawsuit against James on behalf of Heartbeat International, CompassCare, and a group of pregnancy centers in April.
James faces another lawsuit. The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, Gianna’s House, and Options Care Center sued her for “abusing her authority by censoring pro-life pregnancy centers because they tell women about the option of using progesterone for abortion pill reversal.”
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) represents the three pregnancy centers.
“Many women regret their abortions, and some seek to stop the effects of chemical abortion drugs before taking the second drug in the abortion drug process. Taking supplemental progesterone at that time can often save their baby’s life,” said ADF attorney Gabriella McIntyre. “The New York attorney general, however, is doing everything she can to deny women the freedom to make that choice. Women should have the option to reconsider going through with an abortion, and the pro-life pregnancy centers we represent in this case truthfully inform them about that choice. We are urging the court to affirm the pregnancy centers’ freedom to tell interested women about this lawful, life-saving treatment.”
