The recent announcement by the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) to encourage Congress to defund Planned Parenthood is commendable and inspiring.
The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the SBC has organized an initiative aimed at stopping funding for Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country. The federal government is a significant financial supporter of this organization.
The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding for elective abortions; however, funding for Planned Parenthood has been justified under the premise of supporting “women’s health care.”
This raises a question for many fair-minded Americans: is it truly healthcare to terminate a pregnancy profitably?
Planned Parenthood receives almost $500,000 annually in federal funding, which is questionable given its abortion practices. The funds given to Planned Parenthood are fungible, allowing the organization to allocate its budget toward increasing abortion services. The pro-life community has consistently advocated for the message: “Defund Planned Parenthood!”
With the current administration and the Republican majority, a real opportunity exists to turn this demand into action soon.
