Firing an adjunct science professor for stating that a person’s sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes? That’s what a college in Texas did.
St. Philip’s College in San Antonio did not like that Dr. Johnson Varkey, a Christian, was actually teaching biology in his Human Anatomy and Physiology class. First Liberty Institute, Dr. Varkey’s legal counsel, sent a letter to the school demanding his reinstatement.
According to the letter (PDF), a handful of students walked out of his class last November when he said that X and Y chromosomes determine sex. First Liberty contends that Dr. Varkey has received positive feedback and and no disciplinary action before.
“Although St. Philip’s College refused to explain any details about the ‘complaints’ directed toward Dr. Varkey, he presumes that the complaints came from these students. In two decades of teaching these basic, unremarkable concepts, no other students have ever complained.”
St. Philip’s College violated the Free Speech Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act, among other provisions, when it fired the professor.
St. Philip’s College fired an educator for stating a biological fact, suppressing scientific discourse to serve a perverse ideology. Who is served by lying to students, who took out loans and/or are working to pay for their education? Intellectual growth and the pursuit of knowledge should be top priorities for an institution of higher learning. Sadly for the students at St. Philip’s College, they are not.

Once again, the tail wagging the dog. The students who made the complaints regarding the teaching of factual biology by this professor should be expelled. They are no smart enough to be in college. Plus, there is every likelihood that they are nuts. Whoever brought about the firing of the professor should be sued into oblivion for being incompetent and untrustworthy to be in charge of anything to do with education.
The professor would do well to sue the college not only for reinstatement but enough compensation to own the whole school. Then, unwoke it. All of it.
And, where are the alumni on all of this nonsense. Time for them to pull their funding.
