The Yakima Union Gospel Mission is Fighting For the Right to Hire Individuals Who Believe the Gospel

The Yakima Union Gospel Mission in Washington filed a pre-enforcement lawsuit against the state over religious discrimination.

The mission prefers to hire individuals who share its religious beliefs about marriage and sexuality and willing to share the Gospel. The Washington Supreme Court, however, reinterpreted a non-discrimination law in a way that bars the mission from doing this.

How can one who doesn’t believe the Gospel share it? Religious organizations have the right to live their faith, not just believe it.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which represents the mission, will present their client’s argument in court on Tuesday. From ADF:

In August 2024, the 9th Circuit held that the mission can challenge the Washington Law Against Discrimination, the state law at issue. Three months later, a federal district court ordered that state officials cannot enforce the law against the mission because it likely violates the Free Exercise Clause.

“Religious organizations shouldn’t be punished for exercising their constitutionally protected freedom to hire employees who are aligned with and live out their shared religious beliefs,” said Jeremiah Galus, an ADF attorney who argued in court.
