Christians Can't Surrender in Marriage Debate

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

It’s easy to become discouraged in the battle to prevent the homosexual lobby from rendering the word marriage meaningless. It will always mean one thing–the union between one man and one woman–but legally, the word will expand to include not only two people of the same sex, absurd on its face, but also threesomes, foursomes, and whatever deviant groupings corrupted creatures come up with.

In more discouraging news, the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear a homosexual “marriage” case out of Oregon. Voters in that state passed an amendment that affirms marriage as the union between one man and one woman, but federal judge Michael McShane nullified the will of the people. The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) had asked the highest court in the land to stay McShane’s ruling. From Courthouse News:

McShane noted that the case was “something akin to a friendly tennis match rather than a contested and robust proceeding between adversaries,” after Oregon officials conceded that the state’s ban was legally indefensible in light of last year’s Supreme Court decision striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

He said the state’s marriage law leaves same-sex couples and their families “feeling degraded, humiliated, and stigmatized.”

“They face a tiered system of recognition that grants greater legal status to married felons, deadbeat parents, and mail-order brides,” wrote McShane, who is one of nine openly gay federal judges.

“Because the state Attorney General has worked in concert with the plaintiffs to deny the people of Oregon a defense of their state marriage amendment,” NOM said in a press release, “and because the trial judge refused our request to defend the amendment, the people have at least temporarily lost their common-sense law which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”

Regardless of the setbacks, groundswells of opposition have proven effective. For example, the pro-life movement has made strides in recent years. Conservative lawmakers have proposed and passed measures that defund Planned Parenthood and require higher standards of care at abortion mills. People like Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood employee, are exposing what goes in those places. But even if we hadn’t made this progress, would any Christian consider giving up trying to protect unborn babies?

Although homosexuals account for maybe three percent of the population, they’re overrepresented in print and broadcast media. We seemed to be outnumbered, but we have the truth on our side. Even if we become outnumbered 10:1, we must continue to speak out against normalizing sin and calling it good. There is something about this particular sin that sets it apart from others, culturally speaking. For one thing, there are no lobbies for adulterers or thieves, and they don’t attempt to shame others into approving their behavior. These and other sins are part of our fallen nature. We can’t regenerate hearts. We warn; the Holy Spirit convicts.

We all struggle with sin. This is not just a legal battle, but also a spiritual one.
