During a recent speech in Montgomery, Ala., likely 2016 presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson expressed his contempt for the political correctness that has infiltrated so much of today’s culture.
“I’m not politically correct,” he told the crowd, “so don’t be surprised if I say something to offend somebody.”
While Carson explained that any perceived insult would be unintentional, he lamented the fact that “so many people are so easily offended these days.”
He went on to describe political correctness as “one of the most destructive forces to ever hit our nation,” characterizing it as a tool used by leftists to end debates.
“The progressive movement,” he said, “they try to intimidate people into silence, and if they silence you, they can carry out their agenda with no opposition.”
It is important, he asserted, for traditional Americans to not only oppose political correctness, but to understand its underlying purpose.
“We have to be smart enough, though, to recognize what is going on and recognize that this is America and stand up for what we believe in.”
The speech was not Carson’s first foray into bashing politically correct bullies. In fact, the message was a central theme of his CPAC address earlier this year.
“I’m not a fan of political correctness,” he asserted, concluding too many Americans have been “beaten into submission” by those who use such tactics.
During his recent speech in Alabama, Carson encouraged those in the audience to expand their horizons and learn new things, thus making themselves less vulnerable to the left’s intimidation.
“Spend half an hour a day learning something you did not know,” he advised. “If you do that for half an hour a day for a year, I guarantee you people who haven’t seen you for a while will say, ‘Who are you?’ You’ll become the kind of person that cannot be beaten into submission, that would not be easy to fool, and that would make an incredible difference for our nation.”
