According to recent reports, a Florida school is facing backlash from concerned parents over the use of a textbook some say borders on Islamic indoctrination. One father, Ron Wagner, contacted WFTV to express his dismay.
He complained that a passage in the high school history book states: “There is no god, but God. Muhammad is the messenger of God.”
Furthermore, Wagner asserted, his son’s 10th grade class was “instructed to recite this prayer as the first Pillar of Islam, off of the board at the teacher’s instruction.”
The teacher also reportedly assigned a project requiring students to make an Islamic prayer rug and study various other Muslim worksheets.
The father explained he is not upset about the particular religion being explored, only that students are being compelled to take part in a religious activity at school.
“For it to be mandatory and part of the curriculum and in the textbooks,” he said, “didn’t seem right.”
He went on to say that there is “a difference between teaching of the significance or the impact of a religion and teaching the specific tenets of a religion.”
Lyman High School official Dr. Michael Blasewitz, the man responsible for the Seminole County school’s curriculum, began to address the situation with WFTV before he apparently became upset with reporter Daralene Jones’ questioning and walked out during the middle of the interview.
“You’re just going to walk away from our interview when we’re trying to get information,” she responded.
During the truncated conversation, however, Blasewitz made it clear he believes there is no pro-Islam bias in the school system.
“If anything,” he insisted, “it’s a little imbalanced toward Christianity and Judaism.”

Where are the “atheists” when you need them? They should be ‘suing’ this book out of existence – I mean, for heaven’s sake, haven’t we all been advised, repeatedly, about the “separation of church and state?”
Christians can not offer a prayer in school, but requiring the reading of some Islamic prayer is acceptable? Will the last American leaving the country please turn out the lights!
If the curriculum is going to require the recitation of Islam, it should also require the teacher to post and have students recite the 10 Commandments. It should do the same for the other religions — right is right. Please explain to me the necessity for making a prayer rug — is it to pray in the classroom? If that is being allowed, then allow the Christian student the same liberty. Wake up people, Christianity is a relationship with God through his Son, Jesus. You are free to choose to accept Jesus or not. God does not use deception or force anyone to accept Him. Islam functions on deceit and forcefulness. Check out the Quran for yourself!
