Here’s What Happened During Trump’s Meeting with Black Liberal Lawmakers

President Donald Trump, who campaigned on fixing the inner-cities, met with Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members this week to talk about reducing crime in these areas and improving infrastructure.

According to Reuters, the liberal lawmakers called it a “positive” first step.

The lawmakers presented Trump with a 130-page policy proposal [PDF] titled “We Have a Lot to Lose: Solutions to Advance Black Families in the 21st Century,” a reference to Trump’s repeated query on the campaign trail asking what did blacks have to lose by supporting him.

“We think it’s a positive first start and we’re going to continue the dialogue,” Representative Karen Bass, a Democrat from California, told reporters after the meeting.

Trump has pledged to improve the lives of African-Americans, who largely voted in favor of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential election.

President Trump said that every American child “has a right to grow up in a safe community, to attend great schools, to graduate with access to high-paying jobs.”

During the campaign, President Trump asked black voters what they had to lose by taking a chance on him, since inner-cities haven’t improved under liberal politicians.

The president recently signed an executive order to help historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). But Star Parker, founder and president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, called his efforts mistaken.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a distinguished history, and they have played a very important role in black life, particularly during the years of segregation,” she wrote. “But the question today is how does more government money going into these institutions help further President Trump’s promise to fix our inner cities?”
