Harvard University and the Trump administration are in negotiations for the school to spend $500 million to eradicate anti-Semitism on campus and resolve disputes with the administration.
At stake for Harvard: billions of dollars in research funding from the federal government. Sources report that a settlement is imminent.
America First Legal (AFL) has added to Harvard’s woes — if that’s even possible. AFL filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice calling for immediate enforcement action against Harvard Medical School for continuing to use now-illegal “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) programs. From AFL:
The complaint alleges that Harvard is violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, U.S. Supreme Court precedent, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, multiple civil rights statutes, and President Trump’s recent Executive Orders by embedding race-, sex-, and identity-based discrimination throughout its medical school admissions, clerkships, scholarships, research initiatives, and affiliated residency programs.
AFL alleges that the medical school still uses race to favor one individual over another. One method is to use so-called holistic admissions, in which other factors are used as a proxy for race — even though the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Harvard’s racial preference policies as unconstitutional.
Among AFL’s allegations: DEI embedded into outreach and fellowship programs and emphasized in residency programs. Harvard Medical School has also rebranded its DEI programs.
“DEI in medicine is not a harmless fad but a direct threat to public health. When medical schools put identity politics ahead of merit, they compromise the quality of care, erode patient trust, and endanger lives, said Megan Redshaw, AFL attorney. “There is no room for racial engineering or social activism in the operating room.”
California famously uses “holistic review” of college applications, even after voters chose to amend the state constitution in 1996 to bar racial preferences in the state government.
