Black Women Are the Fastest Growing Group of Gun Owners

Antonia Okafor Cover, spokesperson for Gun Owners of America, recently appeared on Fox News to talk about gun rights for law-abiding citizens in the wake of recent mass shootings.

Okafor, a former Obama voter, wanted to carry a handgun on her college campus after being stalked. She said in an op-ed she wrote for the New York Times that “from the minute I put my hands around a Ruger LC9 pistol, the gun I regularly carry with me now, I felt more in control. I felt empowered to be holding a tool that could protect me physically, and I was determined to learn how to use it responsibly.”

Fox News host Lawrence Jones asked her why she thought gun ownership among this demographic was growing. She talked about the history of black gun ownership, especially in the south for protection against Jim Crow, and added that women want to protect themselves.

Okafor Cover said no one is coming to protect us. “No one’s coming to save you…When it comes down to it, you have an individual right to self-protection.” This is a guaranteed right.
