NY AG Letitia James Harassed and Intimidated Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers — A Second Court Told Her to Stop

Thomas More Society in August filed a lawsuit on behalf of pro-life pregnancy centers Summit Life Outreach Center and The Evergreen Association against New York attorney general Letitia James after she threatened and intimidated them over Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services.

James initiated civil enforcement actions against pregnancy centers and filed lawsuits to stop them from sharing information about APR. If a pregnant woman has taken mifepristone, which induces abortions, taking progesterone could reverse the abortion.

Thomas More Society announced a positive outcome for Summit Life Outreach Center and The Evergreen Association. A federal court on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction that stops James’s enforcement actions against them. They are free to continue helping women save their unborn babies’ lives.

“We’re incredibly pleased a federal judge has now made clear that Attorney General Letitia James’ legal attacks on our state’s pro-life ministries unconstitutionally chills our First Amendment right to share the lifesaving message of Abortion Pill Reversal—which gives pregnant moms in the middle of a chemical abortion a second chance to choose life,” said Barbara Bidak, executive director of Summit Life Outreach Center.

James lost in August as well. A federal court issued a preliminary injunction that allows Alliance Defending Freedom clients, The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, Gianna’s House, and Options Care Center, to continue sharing information about APR.

The court in that case contended that the pregnancy centers were likely to succeed on the merits of their free-speech claim, and stopping the pregnancy centers from sharing APR information is “content and viewpoint-based regulation on non-commercial speech that cannot survive strict scrutiny.”
