Democratic Governor Allows Bill Banning Men from Women’s Sports Teams to Become Law

Louisiana’s Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, signed a pro-life bill in 2016 that requires abortionists to wait 72 hours before killing an unborn baby, and another in 2021 to require abortionists to inform women seeking chemical abortions that they have the option to attempt to reverse the process if they change their minds.

Gov. Edwards has made another move that leftists no doubt consider traitorously “conservative.” He allowed a bill that bans boys and men from competing on sports teams designated for girls and women to become law. Gov. Edwards vetoed a similar bill last year.

The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act (PDF) requires schools “to designate intercollegiate and interscholastic athletic teams according to the biological sex of the team members; to provide that teams designated for females are not open to participation by biological males; to provide immunity protections for schools from certain adverse actions…”

Gov. Edwards said he allowed the bill to become law not because he thought it was a good bill. He didn’t sign it because it was clear to him that the legislature would override his veto.

“I think it’s unfortunate,” he said, “but it is where we are.”

Louisiana becomes the 18th state to protect fairness of competition and opportunity for women against this trend of men pretending to be women and defeating women in competitions for which they’ve spent years training.

Indiana lawmakers last month overrode the Republican governor’s veto of a similar bill. Gov. Eric Holcomb said he vetoed the bill because it assumes that “the goals of consistency and fairness in competitive female sports are not currently being met. After thorough review, I find no evidence to support either claim even if I support the overall goal.” The governor also doubts the bill would survive judicial review.
