Hobby Lobby and the Immoral Law

In 2012, Christian retailer Hobby Lobby sued the government to block Obamacare’s requirement that employee health care plans include coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraception drugs. (The morning-after pill is supposed to prevent fertilization, but if the egg is fertilized, the drug prevents it from attaching to the uterus, sometimes called a “mini-abortion.”)

Hobby Lobby faced fines of up to $1.3 million a day for refusing to pay to kill unborn humans. Last year a court granted the company a temporary exemption to providing abortion drugs.

The Bible teaches that we’re to obey the governing authorities:

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. (Romans 13:1-4)

But must we obey a law that compels us to sin?
