Israel held a drill test on a new defense “smart fence” on the border with the Gaza Strip. The new fence, which has been under construction for the past few weeks, will alert IDF and security forces upon suspicious activity close to the border.
Israel has heightened its defense capabilities on the border with Gaza and Sinai following last summer’s Operation Protective Edge, following the destruction of Hamas’s tunnel network into Israeli territory during the Operation. Hamas has been actively rebuilding along the border with Israel — a main road built along the border as well as digging for new tunnel construction.
Reports released earlier this week confirm Hamas’s resumption of digging and construction tunnels from within the Gaza Strip.
Israeli police and intelligence operatives (Shin Bet) confirmed the July arrest of a 21-year old militant, Adel Shehadeh Shaer, who confirmed the construction by Hamas of the main road along the border with Israel. The road reportedly is intended for a surprise attack on Israel that would involve vehicles crossing the border.
Shaer also confirmed that Hamas is being directly funded by Iran and provided information on high-level Hamas officials.
