United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called again on the United Nations Human Rights Council to end its explicit anti-Israel bias.
During her address to the U.N. Human Rights Council on Tuesday, Haley called on member states to address its “chronic anti-Israel bias,” consistent with her continued vocal opposition to Israel bias in international organizations, mainly the U.N.
“It is essential that this council address its chronic anti-Israel bias if it is to have any credibility,” Haley said, pointing out the Council’s five resolutions passed against Israel in March alone. Haley, referencing Venezuela, pointed out the Council has never considered a resolution on human rights abuses in Venezuela, “yet it adopted five biased resolutions in March against a single country, Israel.”
She emphasized that the Council must strengthen its efforts in states where actual human rights violations occur. “It is crucial to adopt the strongest possible resolutions on the critical human rights in Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Belarus and Ukraine…”
Haley reminded the Council that the U.S. is considering withdrawing its membership from the U.N. body. “As you know, the United States is looking carefully at this council and its participation in it. We see some areas for significant strengthening.
In March, the U.S. announced it was strongly considering leaving the U.N. Human Rights Council over its Israeli-bias and “obsession” with Israel. At the time, U.S. State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary Erin Barclay announced that the U.S. “remains deeply troubled by the Council’s consistent unfair and unbalanced focus on one democratic country, Israel,” and that in “order for this Council to have any credibility, let alone success, it must move away from its unbalanced and unproductive positions.”
Barclay stated that the Trump administration is considering “our future engagements” and that “my government will be considering the Council’s actions with an eye toward reform to more fully achieve the Council’s mission to protect and promote human rights.”
