The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) said that Walmart employees contacted them concerning the world’s largest retailer’s lack of accommodation for employees who wanted Sundays or the Sabbath off for worship.
Apparently, the company penalized employees who already had or asked for accommodations. Walmart enacted a new scheduling policy that led to the reduction of hours for these employees. They contacted ACLJ for help.
ACLJ announced on Friday that in working with Walmart, the company has recommitted to accommodating employees. From ACLJ:
At the ACLJ, we previously worked with Walmart in the fall of 2024 on a similar matter and found them to be responsive and respectful of religious liberty. That same responsiveness was on full display again when we recently reached out on behalf of another client.
A Walmart employee in Louisiana recently asked ACLJ for assistance. The employee said he’d previously had a religious accommodation, but things changed.
“In one instance, his schedule dropped to just 19.5 hours per week, jeopardizing his full-time status and associated benefits,” ACLJ said. “As soon as we became aware of this issue, we contacted Walmart directly. We are pleased to report that Walmart promptly investigated the situation and worked with us to resolve this matter.”
That’s good news for the millions of religious employees who work for such a huge corporation.
