Dr. Ben Carson, retired neurosurgeon, announced today that he will run for president of the United States.

In his highly quotable speech, Dr. Carson said (emphasis added), “You know, America remains a place of dreams. And a lot of people are down on our nation. And they want to point out all the bad things that have happened here. But have you ever noticed that there’s a lot of people trying to get in here and not a lot of people trying to escape?”

Dr. Carson said he has no desire to get rid of safety nets for people who need them, but “I have a strong desire to get rid of programs that create dependency in able-bodied people.”
