World Vision Caves to Debased Culture

Unbelievable is a word that comes to mind when reading about World Vision‘s employee policy change.

World Vision, which calls itself a Christian humanitarian organization, one that stood for marriage as the union between one man and one woman, has caved to the culture. According to a new policy, the organization will allow “married” homosexuals as employees.

A statement on the World Vision site reads, “We acknowledge one God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In Jesus Christ, the love, mercy and grace of God are made known to us and all people. From this overflowing abundance of God’s love, we find our call to ministry.”

As the Bible teaches, homosexual behavior is one sin among many. Will World Vision change its policy to acknowledge liars among the employees? How about adulterers and thieves? Probably not. Liars, adulterers, and thieves don’t have powerful lobbies. From Christianity Today:

In an exclusive interview, World Vision U.S. president Richard Stearns explained to Christianity Today the rationale behind changing this “condition of employment,” whether financial or legal pressures were involved, and whether other Christian organizations with faith-based hiring rules should follow World Vision’s lead.

Stearns asserts that the “very narrow policy change” should be viewed by others as “symbolic not of compromise but of [Christian] unity.” He even hopes it will inspire unity elsewhere among Christians.

Stearns doesn’t want us to get it twisted. He says the recognizing homosexual “marriages” among employees is “not an endorsement of same-sex marriage. We have decided we are not going to get into that debate. Nor is this a rejection of traditional marriage, which we affirm and support.”

A debate? With this policy change, homosexuals have won the debate. Stearns says World Vision isn’t caving or compromising. He passes the buck, adding that his organization is an “operational arm of the global church, we’re not a theological arm of the church.”

Why draw a distinction between operational and theological? If you call yourself part of “the global church,” your worldview is–or should be–biblical. It’s excuse-making, pure and simple, and it’s disheartening. Christian organizations must stand firm against a debased culture. What Stearns says doesn’t matter. Our actions speak for us. What World Vision calls unity, God calls an abomination.
