D.C. Mayor Proudly Proclaims She ‘Hates Guns,’ Promises ‘Most Restrictive’ Policy Possible

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed a group of faith leaders recently to explore a number of issues. Included in the discussion was the district’s gun policy which, despite being among the most regulatory in the nation, does not go far enough for the new mayor.

“If it was up to me,” she told the crowd, “we wouldn’t have any handguns in the District of Columbia.”

She went on to indicate that she will grudgingly extend the very slightest courtesy to D.C. citizens the law will allow.

“I swear to protect the Constitution and what the courts say,” she acknowledged, “but I will do it in the most restrictive way as possible.”

Making it clear how she feels about firearms, she told the crowd they now “have a mayor who hates guns.”

Bowser obviously has allies among the district’s legislative leadership. The D.C. council has recently enacted new restrictions regarding the manner and location in which legally owned firearms may be carried. Even that law, however, was a concession by gun control activists after a previous gun carry ban was ruled unconstitutional by U.S. District Court Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr. last year.

As a result of the legislation, a number of gun owners have joined forces to sue the district. Attorney Alan Gura asserted on behalf of his clients that the new restrictions are so prohibitive that they still likely run afoul of Scullin’s ruling.
