Supreme Court Halts Contraceptive Mandate for Religious Groups in Pennsylvania

abortion-is-not-health-care_2Last night, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an order that temporarily bars the federal government from forcing various religious organizations in Pennsylvania to offer or pay for contraceptives for employees.

From Life News:

According to the Becket Fund, Justice Alito’s order is similar to the preliminary order Justice Sotomayor provided to the Little Sisters of the Poor on New Year’s Eve in 2013. The group said order requires the government to brief the Supreme Court next week on why it should be allowed to fine these organizations for refusing to distribute abortion-inducing drugs and devices and other contraceptives.

Lori Windham, Senior Counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, told LifeNews: “How many times must the government lose in court before it gets the message? For years now the government has been claiming that places like Catholic Charities and the Little Sisters of the Poor are not “religious employers” worthy of an exemption.”

It’s telling that we need the Supreme Court to protect what we’re supposed to have through the U.S. Constitution. That any politician, liberal or conservative, would expect a person of faith to pay for drugs that could induce abortions or even to offer it to employees is way beyond unreasonable. It’s outrageous. But that’s the country we live in now. Religious people, Christians in particular, are under assault.

The high court ruled last year that Hobby Lobby and other closely held for-profit companies were exempt from the Obamacare contraceptive mandate if religious owners objected.
