Stephen Broden: An Unheeded Warning By the Black Church

Jesus said, “See to it that no one misleads you.” (Matt 24:4) This caution by Christ rings strongly for the church today.

The culture is challenging the church to capitulate to a neo-morality designed and defined by secular progressives and the agenda of the LGBTQ+P community. This new morality is being forced on our culture through the redefinition of marriage, reassigning gender, and normalizing transsexualism, pederasty, and pedophilia.

The culture in America amazingly has embraced this new morality. It has legitimized the immoral by legalizing same-sex marriage and creating laws that open showers and bathrooms to gender-confused individuals. The culture allows gender-confused boys and men to compete with girls and women in sporting events — all to promote political correctness while destroying traditional values. Our morality has changed and is in flux across our beloved nation. The question is, where is the church amid these extraordinary moral shiftings and redefinitions?

The answer to that question is perhaps best seen in the failure of the church to effectively communicate God’s perspective on what is right and wrong, as represented in the Holy Bible.

The church is in the crossfire of liberal progressives’ ideology to force Christians to join them in establishing a godless morality in the culture. Unfortunately, far too many pastors feel pressured into joining and accepting the politically correct definition of morality or have been intimidated into silence on this massive cultural shift.

The Bible is replete with warnings for believers to be on the alert for adversaries of the faith who will challenge the authenticity of divine doctrines related to holy conduct, salvation, and what is morally right and morally wrong.

One such warning is in Colossians 2:8. “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.”

This warning and others have gone unheeded by spiritual leaders in the black church, specifically as it relates to how our community votes. Over 90 percent of blacks vote for the political party that pushes pagan practices and laws into the public square. When one examines the godless legislation and policies forced into the culture by elected officials and supported by the black church, it is apparent that the moral condition of the church lacks spiritual potency.

An example of this was recently displayed in North Carolina on December 1, 2019, at Greenleaf Christian Church, pastored by William J. Barber. Pete Buttigieg, Democratic candidate for president and openly gay, attended and partook in their communion service. After services, Barber said this to members: “If you are authentically Christian, you have to be open and affirming” of his gay lifestyle [emphasis added].

Buttigieg announced at his official entry into the Democratic race for president that he was gay and married to a man. He also declared that God made him homosexual. Clearly, this is blasphemous and contradicts the explicit biblical teaching against homosexuality and sodomy. To announce that God made him a homosexual makes God a hypocrite. Why would God condemn the practice of homosexuality when He is responsible for their sexuality?

Pete Buttigieg challenged authentic biblical Christianity based on the new morality defined by political correctness advocated by secular humanists and the LGBTQ+P agenda.

The church in the black community has succumbed to the deceptive ploys and allurements of this political correctness agenda. Through infiltration and false prophets deceiving and being deceived, the black church, as a pawn, is manipulated into supporting an anti-God agenda. The warning of Christ resounds strongly for true believers. “Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.” (Matthew 24:11)

Religion News Service reported that Barber reminded his members that “many of their heroes, including poet and novelist Langston Hughes, playwright Lorraine Hansberry, and civil rights strategist Bayard Rustin, also had same-sex attraction.” Rather than pointing his congregation to what the Bible says about homosexuals, he points to black artists who lived sinful lives to justify Pete Buttigieg’s immoral and anti-God lifestyle. Barber positioned political correctness above biblical correctness.

The Apostle Paul asks a question that is appropriate for the black church today. “You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you…” The word bewitched in the Greek is baskaino, which means to beguile, to cast a spell on, cunningly deceive. The meaning is reflective of what’s happening to the black church. The answer to Paul’s question, “who has bewitched you,” is false preachers and deceiving black elected officials who are leading our community to stand against God!

Great, needed, reply to ungodly action of one pastor and church!!

  3. There is a problem with this article. It assumes that a redefinition of what is moral while acknowledging an All mighty God, that is not possible. The most that you can have is a repackaging of immorality into a kind of pseudo morality. . All true morality is bounded up in God’s moral nature and that is unchangeable.

    • The repackaging is through a redefinition. Yes God is all powerful, but He has granted mankind free will. Our volition redefine God’s morality to fit our rebellion against him as evident in the moral condition of fallen man. God’s morals never change but man maneuvers it to fit his paradigm. This is rebellion! Remember Satan challenged what God said in the garden “has God said” in so doing changed the directive of God through a lie which caused the fall. The neo-morality says same sex is right, sodomy is right. This my friend is a redefinition. Because the LGBTQ+P says it moral does not make it moral, but one must see it’s been redefined for the unregenerate.

      • If we cannot change our LGBTQ brethren to the heterosexual way of thinking, as Christians what is our alternative? Do we dismiss and abandon these people, or do we reach out in Christ’s name and offer our friendship and love? At one time this was a simple answer…but maybe not so much anymore.

        • Do we dismiss these people?
What does the bible say? “What fellowship has light with darkness” “Come out from among them” knock the dust off your feet’ Yes we are to share the truth with them in love, but affirming their sin is not biblical.

God see us in two categories. Saved from the wrath to come, and perishing because of rejecting his Son and His love. What we do when the homosexual rejects God’s offer is to pray for them. Pray God will get their attend soften their heart that they may escape the judgement of God that is to come. Not befriend them in their sin!
