NC Governor Vetoed Bills to Protect Women, Children, and Parents’ Rights — But It’s Not Over

Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina has vetoed bills that would protect fairness in women’s sports, children from genital mutilation and puberty blockers, and parents’ rights.

Gov. Cooper accused Republicans of “scheming for the next election” in passing these bills. He apparently believes that protecting children from undergoing procedures that will render them sterile for the rest of their lives is a campaign ploy.

North Carolina’s legislature has the votes to override the governor’s veto. They did so in April after he vetoed a bill that allowed law-abiding residents to buy a handgun without getting a permit from the sheriff’s office.

Gov. Cooper said that parents are “the most essential educators for their children and their involvement must be encouraged” but claimed that the bill protecting their rights “will scare teachers into silence by injecting fear and uncertainty into classrooms.”

Riley Gaines, the female swimmer who competed against a man in the NAACP swimming championship, posted a video on Twitter that showed a man on a women’s volleyball team slamming a woman in the head with the ball.

“Hey Gov, reminder that this happened to a girl in your state,” Gaines tweeted. “She is partially paralyzed on her right side & her vision is still impaired. It’s not me who has to go to sleep tonight knowing I’m enabling this.”
