The United Nations General Assembly is supporting an Arab-backed resolution calling on Israel to renounce any possession of nuclear weapons and facilities. The resolution entitled “The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East” was announced Tuesday and requests for the State of Israel to allow inspection and oversight of any nuclear facilities.
Israel has never confirmed any nuclear facilities or weapons to date.
Israel is one of five states including Pakistan, South Sudan, North Korea and India not part the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) signed in 1968 and extended in 1995. The International Atomic Energy Agency is responsible for “safeguarding” the treaty.
The resolution received a 161-5 vote and focused on Israel as the only Middle Eastern country not part of the treaty calling on Israel to “accede to that treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons.”
